4 Pieces of Advice for New Shopify Business Owners

As you get ready to strike out on your own as a new Shopify business owner you’re facing many challenges. Taking the first and most important step towards realizing your career as an online retailer was making the decision to go ahead. Now you need some support. Here are four pieces of advice every Shopify business owner should follow.

1. Work Hard on Your Marketing

It’s not enough to just focus on your products or services and assume that they will sell. Without proper marketing it will be quite hard to establish your business or brand on the market no matter how good your products or services are.

Marketing is challenging and requires a mindset that focuses on the thought processes of your customers. If you’re selling an amazing product, spend a few weeks thinking about the best way to access your target customers.

Focus on the following channels:

  • Online advertising
  • Social media advertising
  • Content marketing
  • PR

…and consistent and compelling content creation for each of these channels. Shopify as a platform will do a lot to help, too. Take advantage of its excellent resources wherever you can.

2. Minimize Time Spent on Menial Tasks

There are a bunch of menial or administrative tasks that you’re going to have to perform as a new Shopify business owner. Try to spend as little time on rote infrastructure as possible, and focus instead on keeping the quality of your store and products high.

The tasks you’re going to need to take care of can include:

  • Managing inventory
  • Social media posting and analytics
  • New business development
  • CRM

Choose the ones that work for you, and use them to keep your administrative tasks as streamlined as possible.

3. Don’t Neglect SEO

Search engine optimization is a very important aspect of any online presence and shouldn’t be neglected. If you’re not familiar with SEO start by taking some time to find out as much as you can about how Google’s search rankings work and what organic SEO is. Here are some basics.

The first page of Google is made up of the 10 or so results that have the highest relevance to each specific search term (keyword). When people search for a specific product or service online, they rarely go beyond the first few pages of search results. Your goal is always to make it onto these pages when your customers are searching for products like yours, and of course, to have higher search engine ranking for relevant keywords than your competition.

Lots of different things go into your SEO, including how much original content your site boasts, and the external sites that link to it.

4. Be Persistent

Our final piece of advice is not to give up. If you have a great product that people really need, persist. You can have a lot of success selling it on Shopify. It is never easy to get started, but with some perseverance, dedication, and commitment to getting better you can succeed. Stay at it.
